Headline Of The Day

"Adultery Finds a Pol on Hiking Trail of Life"

From Margaret Carlson's story found here.

For the record I would have never guessed that Mark Sanford would go down like this. He had a bright future ahead of him (some say very bright, I'm not so sure of that). Regardless, this is a terribly sad story and my thoughts are with him and his family.

Power corrupts, my friends. Do you have the strength to battle it?

  1. Thanks for posting my comment. I think that many "neocons" get is semantic, the term having been constantly associated with Bush and his inner circle. That's why I proposed just using "Wilsonian," a term that confers exogenous morality in the world of foreign policy.

Anyway, I have two thoughts that always come to mind when a high-profile politician admits to committing adultery, and they somewhat contradict each other:

    1) Who cares? Do we consider adultery immoral? Even so, are politicians committed to leading moral (albeit legally sound) lives? Does morality have anything to do with a politician's product, being public service and good policy? Isn't the concept of marriage a religious and not secular one anyway?

    2) Berlusconi. The sleezeball uses power to fornicate with minors. How could this possibly be good for a country? Shouldn't politicians be held to the same ethical restraints as the rest of us shmucks? Doesn't this abuse of power corrupt the ideal of egalitarianism? If he can do that, what else can he do that we don't know about?
