Thoughts On Gay Marriage

Much to the chagrin of many people I know, I'm fairly agnostic on this issue-though I tend to lean against when I do lean. That's for many reasons, not least of which is that I think a redefinition of this particular cultural institution is simply unnecessary to achieve the human/civil rights that gay people are currently denied, such as visitation rights etc. I know this will score low with lots of people, but I hope that they can be mature and not make it personal.

I will say this though, that a certain prized and oft-worshipped figure within the Liberal universe holds precisely the same position I do on this issue. I know most glossy-eyed admirers have pushed this reality to the back of their head, or even forgotten it altogether, to make their idolatry slightly easier. I kid, I kid... Sort of.

Two (very) important weigh-ins re: gay marriage,

1) Donald Trump made the right call by allowing Carrie Prejean to keep her crown as Miss California. The selective outcry regarding this issue has been absurd, and the deliberate character assassination attempts on Prejean mimicked those used on Palin. I have no interest in beauty pageants whatsoever, but I thought that Prejean's answer was clearly honest and from the heart, two characteristics we tend not to associate with contestants' answers at beauty pageants (but should encourage!).

2) Read Ross Douthat's third column as a Times contributor. I think he makes some very valuable points.

  1. To me there's absolutely no reasonable argument against same-sex marriage, union, sex, whatever. Actually, to me it's not even an issue. I think we waste a lot of time talking about it and getting nowhere. I say legalize same-sex marriage so we can carry on making the world a better place.

  2. Wait, Im confused: I am all for civil unions, but not marriage. Are you confusing the two? I think marriage has a definition that is determined by society and that the rights that marriage affords those who partake can be and should be given to gay Americans who choose to have a civil union.

If we legalize anything that we deem difficult to resolve as a society I think we'll be making the world a really terrible place in the short term and won't have enough time to solve the consequential issues that arise. Right?
